THE BEST IN THE WEST TALENT CONTEST began in 1989 producing 16 shows at Joshua’s Supper Club in Inglewood, California. By August of 1990, I came in contact with Anheuser Busch, “Budweiser” and started working together with the local distributors through all the legal process to bring them on board as our Title sponsor. For two years we worked out all the kinks, meanwhile we had already moved the showcase to Carlos and Charlie’s in Hollywood. In 1992 we produced our first round of Budweiser shows with standing-room-only crowds, with lines forming all the way down the block. This popularity soon pushed the show to step up to venues such as The Palace and The House of Blues in order to accommodate our following which had now grown to between 1,500 and 2,000 per show. Participation from the entertainment industry increased with more record labels, comedians and actors joining our show. “The Best in the West” was not only a major hit in Hollywood but it expanded to a statewide competition, from San Diego and LA to The Bay. The show was combined into one big show held once a month, showcasing 10 to 15 acts during a two hour contest. The performers consisted of Pop, Rock, R&B, Rap, and Gospel including dancers and comedians. Our showcase had been visited and hosted by a countless number of celebrity artists including Yvette Wilson, Jamie Foxx, The Boys, the late MC Trouble, Kiki Sheppard, Faizon Love, Robert Townsend, Ollie Woodson, and Cliffton Powell and a host of sports figures.
